If you can’t get used to that, maybe you have to find ways that let you edit without listening to the audio, like with the Descript software, which enables you to edit based on the automatically created podcast transcript. If this doesn’t work for you, maybe you’ll need to have another person edit the podcast for you.

If there is no way to overcome the anxiety and if you truly feel bad about recording and the publicity of having your voice out there in the world, maybe podcasts aren’t for you. Maybe you can pursue other means of sharing your thoughts, like blogging or posting text on social media.

Tips for podcast beginners from the experts

We talked to various podcasting experts and condensed their experience into actionable pieces of newbie information for you. Possibly not every tip applies to your podcast, but I’m confident that you’ll find one or two tips at least that will help you to build a great podcast.

David Triana, Publicist at Otter PR

I’ve been a podcast host for five years, hosting the Followers of the Force podcast on iTunes. My most important pieces of advice are the following:

  • Make sure you’re talking about a topic you love/are passionate about and have the ability to talk about it at length. Dead air can make cause your audience to lose interest and potentially not tune back in for another episode. If this is an issue for you, I strongly recommend co-hosts. Makes sure you have a good rapport before recording an episode and once you decide it’s a good fit, hit that record button.
  • You don’t need to break the bank to have your podcast sound professional. Condenser mic’s for under $100 and a free audio editing platform such as Audacity, or GarageBand for Mac users, will have your podcast sounding great.
  • From a marketing perspective, Twitter is your best friend. From spreading the word about your podcast to booking guests, there is no greater tool. I’ve been able to get Star Wars authors, Oscar-winning VFX and film editors, and actors on the podcast. It’s really helped with our audience engagement and reach.
  • Finally, probably the most important piece of advice, if you feel burnt out, take a break. The audience can tell when you’re not engaged in the conversation, and that’s the last thing you want. It’s ok to take as much time off as you need. Just remember to communicate it to your audience.

There are a lot of things that go into hosting the perfect podcast, but when it comes to monetization and the ad experience, the true experts are a podcast’s listeners. My team asked over 1,000 podcast listeners what makes a good listening experience and what they would change about their favorite podcast’s advertising. Here’s what we found:

  • Biggest ad pet peeves include ads that interrupt the podcast’s flow (56%), ads that are too repetitive (56%), and ads that are too excessive (50%).
  • Ads over 40 seconds long are making listeners unsubscribe.
  • Over 70% of podcast listeners prefer ads that are live-read by the host versus pre-produced, and over 52% of listeners prefer their ads read by the host rather than listening to sponsor-produced ads.
  • 45% of listeners have made a purchase from a podcast ad, and almost 1 in 3 who haven’t, are considering it.

Given that over half of all Americans listen to podcasts, any potential podcaster should know how their ad choices impact how many listeners tune in to each episode.

Joan Salge Blake, Nutrition Professor at Boston University and Host of SpotOn!

The best advice to a newbie wanting to start a podcast is to make sure you have a niche audience. For example, I am a nutrition professor at Boston University and teach a very large Introduction to Nutrition class to college students. In each class, the students would ask me about the latest “nutrition news” that they were hearing on social media, such as trendy eating patterns, celebrities on fad diets, and supplements.

Most of it was based on nutrition misinformation. After years of answering these questions, I created “SpotOn!”, a nutrition, health, and wellness podcast geared towards college students, those who are soon going to be college students, and anyone who knows a college student (parents, relatives). It focuses on the hottest topics of the day and cuts through the media hype to give sound information in an entertaining format. To date, we have over 115,000 plays. I host it on Anchor, which is owned by Spotify.

I have been podcasting for 15 years and help guide new podcasters in their startup and growth journies.

  • I always recommend that all podcasters own their entire podcasting journey. The analogy is to build your house on property that you own rather than property that you rent. The best way to get started is by owning your own domain and hosting your podcast and RSS feed through it. The best way to accomplish that is with WordPress and PowerPress. Blubrry is a host that offers the ability to host your media files and WordPress and PowerPress installation with one cost.
  • Solid hardware is also an important part of starting a new podcast. If your sound (or video if you go that way) quality is lacking, people leave nearly immediately. Blue microphones are popular but difficult to make sound good. Something like the Neat Bumblebee II is an inexpensive option that sounds better than most mics and even looks good on camera.

Meera Watts, Founder at SiddhiYoga

I’ll recommend Audacity if you’re a newbie in this field. The reason is Audacity is free and has the basic features you need for building the podcast. Once you get a hold of it, you can shift to some plan-based tool if you want advanced software. The best part is there is no restriction on the time you want to record.

The only thing you need is space in your hard drive to store it, which is pretty self-explaining. You can easily crop tracks, record tracks, and edit them. And it comes with its own audio box. Hence, you can drop effects and use an equalizer to make the recording more professional which is great for a beginner, considering it is free.

Starting a podcast is a commitment. There is more to it than just recording some audio and posting it. Before you dive into creating your own podcast, answer these questions.

  1. What type of podcast do I want to do?
  2. How will the podcast help me or my business?
  3. What are you offering to your audience?

I would suggest taking some time to listen to podcasts that are similar to get a feel for what others are doing. And research technology for your podcast. I use Audacity to edit my podcast. It is a free tool, and I use Buzzsprout to host my podcast.

If you want to grow your podcast, invite an expert guest to feature. This will diversify the points of view you share and also expose you to a wider audience. Prepare some assets to promote the podcast, then when it’s live, send them to your guest. Encourage them to share that they have featured on your podcast and tag you in. They’ll have their own following, and it might be totally different from yours, which will help you reach a new audience.

Also, get your podcast on YouTube. YouTube is the second biggest search engine, so you want to be visible there. A podcast is ready-made content – convert the audio to a video to get it uploaded.


Podcasting can be a fun and interesting way to share your thoughts and ideas with the world. In order to start a podcast, you’ll need some basic equipment and software, as well as a topic or niche to focus on. Once you have all of that squared away, it’s time to start recording. Be sure to market your podcast and grow your audience by promoting your show on social media and other platforms.
