Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora review

Developed by Massive Entertainment, Ubisoft Shanghai, Ubisoft Düsseldorf, FoxNext, and Massive Entertainment AB, and published by Ubisoft, this game is set in the open world of the Western Frontier of Pandora. Available on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Amazon Luna, and Microsoft Windows, it offers an immersive experience that perfectly integrates into the Avatar franchise.

Gameplay

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora offers an engaging gameplay experience. As a Na’vi character, players are given the freedom to explore the vast and beautiful open world of Pandora’s Western Frontier. The game provides a sense of wonder and danger as you journey through unpredictable regions where even a momentary lapse in vigilance can lead to deadly consequences.

While exploration is encouraged, the game also caters to those who prefer a more guided experience. A “guided mode” helps players find specific locations, objects, or characters, making it ideal for those who may not have the time or inclination to explore extensively.

The game feels like they took the best mechanics and learnings from the Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed franchises and put them in the licensed world of Avatar, based on the movies of James Cameron. If you ask me, there’s even a tiny bit of The Division in the mix; walking around in the makeshift Resistance HQ surely gives me some Division vibes. The side quests feel important and rewarding upon completion, keeping players motivated and hungry for more.

Technical aspects

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is built on the Snowdrop engine, renowned for its stunning visuals and extraordinary level of detail. This game pushes the boundaries of immersion, taking full advantage of the power of new-gen consoles and PCs.

While not as complex as some players may have hoped, the character creator still allows for customization of the Na’vi character’s appearance and body type. Additionally, the ability to style your Na’vi character with clothing from different clans and even humans adds a layer of personalization that enhances immersion. If you want to check out the character creator in action, watch the video below and skip to 14:10 to avoid spoilers.

Music

The music in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, composed by Pinar Toprak, is a standout feature. The soundtrack is well-synced with the events happening in the game, enhancing the overall atmosphere and immersion. It adds depth and emotion to the gameplay, further immersing players in the world of Pandora.

Visuals

One of the highlights of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is its stunning visuals. With detailed environments and beautifully rendered characters, the game’s graphics are top-notch. The attention to detail in the design of Pandora’s Western Frontier is commendable, creating a visually captivating world for players to explore. There are several biomes and regions that feel entirely different, but all are well-made.

Story

Set after the events of the first Avatar film, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora offers a great immersive story. Players take on the role of a Na’vi character who has been abducted and trained by the human militaristic corporation known as the RDA. Awakening 16 years later in an abandoned facility, players must navigate the dangers of Pandora while protecting it from the formidable forces of the RDA.

The main story is very inviting, but the quality of the sidequests and the sheer joy of exploration are also good. Even if you decide to help a random NPC with their side quest, it doesn’t feel dull and unimportant. Instead of just skipping dialogue, I found myself caring for their problems and helping them. It feels like it made a difference, and it’s overall very rewarding.

Conclusion

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is an expensive AAA title, but it is worth every penny. The combination of stunning visuals, well-synced music, engaging gameplay, and a captivating story make this game a standout in the gaming industry. Despite the character creator not being as complex as some players would have liked, the ability to customize the Na’vi character’s appearance and body type in-game alleviates any initial concerns. This game is a must-play for fans of the Avatar franchise and those seeking an immersive and engaging gaming experience.
