Ever got tired of adventure games that face you with hack and slash situations and the story never progresses? Well, if you like indie games that tell you the most absurd stories, I’ve got just one for you! What Remains of Edith Finch is a narrative adventure game that tells you the story of the Finches.
What happened to the Finches?
You play as the only remaining member of their clan, Edith Finch, Jr. More commonly known as the “most unfortunate family,” because family members notably have an untimely death and only one child is left to continue their bloodline in each generation.
It is a first-person game that focuses more on the story which you can unravel by going through the Finches’ old house. Uncovering and sometimes re-living the deaths of your late family members through shrines, journals, etc. The graphics in this game are also absolutely stunning. I commend the complexity and creativity especially with the architecture of the house and the flashback mini-games.
What Remains of Edith Finch generally had positive reviews from critics. A lot of the reviews certainly focused on the tragic storyline. It received an award for “Best Narrative” by The Game Awards 2017. It also recently won an award for “Excellence in Narrative” by the SXSW Gaming Awards. This isn’t the only masterpiece that the developers have made. Giant Sparrow debuted with their hit game The Unfinished Swan. And these guys really do have a reputation for their creativity in storytelling.
