Why do batteries age?

Battery aging is tied to both chemical and physical processes. With every charge and discharge cycle, tiny changes occur inside the battery. Lithium-ion batteries, for example, experience the formation of a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on the anode, which impacts ion flow and reduces capacity. High temperatures and overcharging can exacerbate these issues, causing batteries to degrade faster.
