Some video game mechanics and vibes get introduced, stay, or even improve over time. However, others, no matter how popular, can disappear along with entire game genres without much explanation. Rogue Flight, developed by Truant Pixel and published by Perp Games, felt like a great attempt to bring back at least two “lost” vibes from video gaming history. We received a review key for Xbox to test the game out, so let’s dive into this title.

Does Rogue Flight provide what it promises?

Long story short, I would say it does. It revives a forgotten genre in a style that suits the modern gaming world just as much as it pleases all who enjoy a bit of retro gaming. If I had to describe it in a single word, I would say that Rogue Flight combines classic space sidescrollers with an experience some might remember from Star Fox games, a so-called “on-rails shooter,” and mixing all of these ingredients up with the visual appeal of a fast-paced sci-fi anime of let’s say the 80s or 90s.

Perhaps Rogue Flight doesn’t provide a very immersive story and lacks the character customization that gamers are used to in our time and age. Still, it excels in what it focuses on, providing high-quality visuals and fast-paced action. It packs fantastic effects, music, fast gameplay, and an overall experience that is really enjoyable.

I have good news for all who fear such games because they might be too hard for them, and they don’t want to get sweaty while playing. It comes with various difficulty settings. You can scroll all the way down to an easy setting and don’t get killed imminently if you are not that focused on the challenge of the game but much rather enjoy other sensations provided.

While you might be stuck with a single character to play, you can customize many parts of your spaceship. There are options that you unlock quickly as you normally play through stages, and there are even some that don’t only alter your appearance but the attributes of the ship, such as your weapons or maneuverability. Bonus tip: go for the Japanese language in the options for the right vibe.

Rogue Flight verdict?

I would say go for it if you feel the description and trailer look like what you would enjoy. It feels just like what they are selling, and I found no aspects of the game that would hold me back from recommending it to such gamers. The game was released on October 14, 2024, and there are already some important updates that provide more quality to the game.

You can play on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows, Xbox Series X, and Series S. Depending on where and on what platform you buy it, it costs around 20 bucks, which isn’t cheap either, but on the other hand, it goes pretty much without competition if this checks all the boxes of what you want from a game. There is also a physical copy, but you might get better deals for a digital version.
