The Internet might someday be available via a simple LED lamp, or that’s at least what folks at Oledcomm, the French company that invented one such lamp, are trying to achieve. Their product is called MyLiFi, and it is indeed something else.
Light Fidelity + Wi-Fi = MyLiFi
The lamp itself looks very much like your typical desk lamp. It’s flexible, just like any decent desk lamp so you can direct its beam where you need it. But it’s not just a regular lamp.
In addition to brightening your desk, MyLiFi also provides a secure, wireless, and radio wave-free internet connection to the devices in its near vicinity. If they have a USB port, that is.
How is this possible, you might ask? The device uses LiFi, or “Light Fidelity” technology. LiFi is a new method of connecting devices on the Internet using LED lights.
To make use of MyLiFi, you only need a USB dongle which you insert into your device. The connection is reasonably fast, at 23 megabits per second (Mbps). According to the brochure, “laboratory tests have shown a theoretical speed of 224 gigabits per second (Gbps), meaning a high-definition movie could be downloaded within seconds.”
It is fully customizable via an app. So you can adjust its brightness, temperature color, schedule when you want it to be on or off, or when you need certain brightness and color adjustments.

The app also lets you control all the lights in an area at once. It has the so-called routine feature which enables you to set light and LiFi schedules to support your daily activities from the early morning until late at night or until however long your day might be.
Of course, the connection works even if you switch off the light, in case you’ve been wondering.
MyLiFi keeps your data safe
MyLiFi is very useful for anyone concerned with online safety. You no longer have to worry about someone stealing your Wi-Fi connection and/or private information because now the Wi-Fi signal is safe inside your lamp.
The MyLiFi Pro applications are very convenient for companies who want to provide their interns and clients with a safe and practical solution for an easy and secure internet access with no need for a password. This way the company’s connection and information are safe from prying eyes and hackers.
