Technology in the beauty industry has made splashes in the past few years, and companies such as L’Oréal have taken part in this advancement. The company kicks off the year by unveiling its latest technology at CES 2023: the HAPTA and Brow Magic, the first at-home DIY electronic makeup applicator and eyebrow applicator.
HAPTA is L’Oréal’s latest handheld computerized makeup applicator for those who have limited hand and arm mobility. Meanwhile, Brow Magic uses printing technology to draw in your eyebrows in seconds. Prior to these, the company has already shown interest in merging beauty with technology through innovations such as the Makeup Genius app which uses AR tech.
What is HAPTA?
People with low hand and arm mobility may find it difficult to apply makeup on themselves. L’Oréal understands that and therefore came up with a solution to make them feel empowered. HAPTA diminishes the challenges of makeup application for all enthusiasts to wear it perfectly.

HAPTA is a combination of built-in smart motion controls and customizable attachments to improve a user’s motion while applying makeup. The device has a magnetic attachment and can rotate 360 degrees and can have a flexion of 180 degrees. It also has a clicking feature that allows users to set the device to the position they want while applying their makeup. The applicator has a built-in battery so you can use it for an hour continuously after a 3-hours charge.
What is Brow Magic?
L’Oréal partnered with Prinker to develop the technology of Brow Magic. The result is an AR device that prints non-permanent eyebrow tattoos in seconds. The device has 2,400 small nozzles and can print a maximum of 1,200 drops per inch. It even gives a detailed brush stroke pattern on the user’s eyebrows according to their facial structure to make it look natural. To wipe it off, users can apply any regular makeup removers. The device is handy and lightweight so you can carry it wherever you go.
That’s not all the Brow Magic can do. Microblading, threading, and waxing are just some of the things that people do to achieve an eyebrow that’s on fleek, but takes a lot of time and effort to do. To help with that, the device uses L’Oréal’s Modiface AR technology to scan a user’s face and gives recommendations for microblading, micro-shading, or filler effects.

All you need is to install the L’Oréal Brow Magic app into your smartphone and follow these steps:
- Scan your face with the Modiface brow reader.
- Choose your desired eyebrow shape, thickness, and effect.
- Brush your eyebrows with the L’Oréal Brow Magic primer.
- Sweep the printer in a single swift move over one eyebrow. Do the same for the other brow.
- Put on a topcoat finish across the eyebrow to finish the look.
L’Oréal is trying to develop a new way consumers can beautify themselves by combining advanced technology with their legacy. The goal is to reinvent the original technology within the conventional beauty experience.
