The world has become much louder in recent years, offline and online. With an abundance of platforms to air out opinions or share experiences, everyone always has something to say. This makes cyberspace generally overwhelming especially when most people have access to the internet. Sometimes, a little break from it wouldn’t hurt.
Taking a break from the internet and digital devices can help one reset and recharge. Being online all the time can affect one’s physical and mental state more than we know. According to a 2004 research study by Gloria Mark, people spend an average of 2.5 minutes on a screen before switching to another. By 2023, people’s attention span was down to only 47 seconds. This can somehow be attributed to the short media forms that are more prominent these days. With the auto-play format, people can scroll endlessly and easily skip to other content.
There’s also an option now to watch shows ad-free, albeit at a cost. People may also opt to skip ahead when binge-watching. This makes it more convenient to watch shows on devices for hours. Staying glued to one’s screen has become the norm. However, taking a much-needed break once in a while has its benefits.
Mental and physical health check
The digital space often creates unrealistic expectations. People often flock from one fad to another because of peer pressure. Unconsciously, people get affected by what other people post online. For example, a friend’s recent trip abroad can make one envious and wish they had been on one too. When social media dictates what’s in and out, trying to keep up can be exhausting. Aside from the mental aspect, using digital devices for long periods can cause eyestrain, blurry vision, and headaches. Our mental space, as well as our eyes, necks, and backs, will thank us for a much-needed digital detox.

Better relationships
Current relationships can benefit from a digital detox as it provides more time to be mentally and physically present at the moment. Disconnecting from the online world can also forge more meaningful real-life connections. Spending quality time with loved ones becomes more rewarding than online engagement when not hyper-focused on smartphones and posting content on social media.
Clear mind and sharp focus
The added stress of keeping up with social media trends can lead to feeling burned out and unmotivated. Tons of different content and information found online may also trigger sensory overload. With enough time to unwind and relax, a well-rested mind can help an individual focus on the task at hand. Having a gadget-free environment can also help bring about new and creative ideas. With no distractions around, one may become more productive and efficient. An individual’s mood can be improved as well if one learns to stray from doomscrolling.
Final thoughts
Just like physical detox, mental and digital detox has its perks. Whether looking for a way to reset or wanting to try a new thing, a digital detox will do any person good. It will positively affect the individual and the people around them as well. As we have often said, too much of anything is never a good thing. Limiting stressors and learning to take a break once in a while from any activity is necessary to ensure balance in life.
