What It Takes to Become a Digital Nomad

-

Digital nomadism has been gaining traction for years now. For those still unfamiliar with the term, a digital nomad is someone who takes their work while they go from one place to another. It’s mostly associated with remote workers doing part-time and freelancing jobs, although some do it full-time. More often than not, this type of worker prefers to travel a lot.

Considering the digital nomad lifestyle

According to Statista, there’s a continuous increase in people who are becoming a digital nomad, with the numbers surging between 2019 to 2020. This upward trajectory can be partially attributed to the pandemic, as most have been searching for another way to continue doing their jobs while at home. Some people dream of this type of work and lifestyle, but what does it take to be a digital nomad?

Durable gadgets

Taking your laptop everywhere is bound to take its toll on the device. Of course, it’s imperative to invest in a gadget that’s durable and would stand the test of time. It goes without saying that your accessories, such as your mouse and keyboard, should be equally durable. A portable laptop table may also serve its purpose when in the wild or working in areas with uneven pavements.

Reliable internet connection

Of course, when one is working remotely, one would require a stable Internet connection. Depending on how heavy the usage is, like sending emails, uploading projects, or attending webinars, some companies even require a minimum internet speed. Digital nomads are expected to invest in portable WiFi to do their tasks with ease when there’s no available free Internet in the hotels and cafés they work from.

Documents, accessories, and everyday essentials

Ensuring that all your documents are up to date and in a safe, accessible area is also necessary when one is on the go. This is important for cases that need your personal information, like medical records in cases of emergencies. Staying outdoors and hopping from place to place requires having essentials such as medication and other items for hygiene purposes as well. Digital nomads must make sure to bring the right bag that can contain everything they need to withstand the weather and environment.

Research

As with anyone who travels to a different location, digital nomads are expected to do research about the place of their destination before a trip. Doing so will let them know what type of clothes and things are needed. It will also enable them to familiarize themselves with places conducive to work or where they can get other essential products.

Stable mental health and relationships

Maintaining relationships while being away from loved ones is one of the challenges that digital nomads face. Some people take their family or spouse with them and adapt the digital nomad lifestyle together. For others who don’t have that luxury, it takes mental preparedness and emotional maturity to venture and stay in this lifestyle. Emotionally speaking, digital nomads need to possess a determined attitude and open mind. So, if you’re looking to lead that life, it’s important to be mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared.
