When Blizzard released the original Warcraft III back in 2002, the last thing they expected was for it to become a household gaming title. Of course, we all know that it turned out to be a success, with popular maps eventually branching out and becoming what we know is DotA.
Now Blizzard is hoping to spark back the interest for the title by releasing a remastered version called Warcraft III: Reforged. The game is now available for purchase through the Battle.net store.
Expected changes in the remaster
The remaster offers an opportunity to relive the memorable Warcraft III campaigns. This includes the ones from the expansion packs with newer graphics, a new and improved map editor, and an updated user interface. It also has over 4 hours of redesigned cutscenes. However, it doesn’t change much in regards to gameplay in hopes to keep the classic feeling intact and balanced.
Another main aspect of this new version is the modern matchmaking and improved custom games browser. This is due to the introduction of the new Battle.net feature that should ensure better integration.
The downside to the remaster
Blizzard built the preexisting Warcraft III Battle.net servers, which should mean that you can switch between the original and the Reforged version. Although they meant for players to enjoy the updated multiplayer features on both ends, this wasn’t the case.
The game was met with disappointment from most of its players who took their complaints to the Blizzard forums. Since the original version of the game is no longer available for purchase without the improved Battle.net 2.0. Aside from that, the problems that the remaster had unfortunately carried over to the original version of the game.
Warcraft III: Reforged costs $30, while the Spoils of War edition costs $40. This edition includes new in-game hero skins for Warcraft III: Reforged and dozens of rewards for other Blizzard titles like World of Warcraft, Diablo III, and Overwatch. However, due to what seemed to be an overwhelmingly negative response from their fanbase, Blizzard is currently allowing a refund for those who purchased it.
