After a ridiculously long wait, Larian Studios has finally released information on Baldur’s Gate 3. The game will be the first new content for the Baldur’s Gate series since 2004.
Baldur’s Gate is an RPG series based in the Forgotten Realms, a Dungeons and Dragons campaign world. Larian Studios is known for creating Divinity Original Sin, a similar fantasy RPG series. An announcement was posted for the reveal to go live at PAX East on February 27th, 2020.
A Completely New Look
Since the announcement, much more has been revealed about the structure of the game. In an article by Kotaku, it is shown that the game will be turn-based instead of the real-time/turn-based hybrid that the previous games were. This was made to keep the feel of the game as close to a game of D&D as possible.
Baldur’s Gate 3 also took another turn from the series. It showcases more developed graphics that reveal characters and action, instead of a bird’s eye view with most of the story conveyed through narration.
The game’s story revolves around your character who has had a “Mind Flare” parasite implanted into their brain. Instead of becoming ill, you gain mysterious new powers that you must decide to use for good or evil. Every decision made in the game comes with actual repercussions down the line, and there are a variety of endings that players can achieve.
Baldur’s Gate 3 will take place 100 years after the stories of the first two Baldur’s Gate games. With that being said, Kotaku reported that players do not have to know anything about the game’s predecessors to understand or enjoy the new game.
