From Gameboys to cars, the late 90s offered a glimpse through the future with products encased with see-through material so you can see its inner workings. Like many trends before it, the clear craze eventually disappeared. However, with today’s rapid advancements in LCD technology, we might experience a second wave of that craze. This time, with screens displaying images over a transparent background. At the forefront of this wave is Lenovo’s ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop, which was recently revealed during MWC 2024.
The future of transparency
Taking advantage of a micro-LED transparent display, Lenovo’s ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop presents a borderless transparent lid. Like a window to the outside world, it attempts to seamlessly integrate what’s on the other side by looking through the display. Using AI, the objects placed on the other side can be detected, and there can be little AR interaction. These AR minigames seem to be a fun way to showcase the laptop’s capabilities, but you can do the same things on your phone camera. While the bottom half is not transparent, the keyboard is like a big touchpad that gives that futuristic touch, not to mention its geometric design.
While the ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop’s transparent display impresses, the question of usefulness is still open. On the surface, there’s no clear answer except to showcase how cool it is. On the contrary, people have concerns about privacy with such a product. Do users really want their screen to be visible on the other side, too? What if employers impose using such laptops? Lenovo has explained that they are looking into these concerns.
Hi there! The ThinkBook Transparent Display is still a proof of concept as we explore the potential capabilities of transparent displays. However, we are looking into ways of adjusting the opacity of the display to protect our user's privacy.

Novelty alone is sure to bring in an audience, but without substances, it’s unclear how a product like the ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop can go forward. If history teaches us anything, the second clear craze may be even shorter than the first one. It may not even come to store shelves in the first place. Lenovo is making clear that it is only a proof of concept; it’s an amazing one, in my opinion, but it is only proof of what can be done with technology. Meaning it isn’t guaranteed to be commercialized. This doesn’t have to be a negative. As long as innovation persists, the future can be transparent.
