Crocker Park, a center in Ohio with over 10 million visitors a year, has recently unveiled an addition to its security measures. The shopping area will be using an autonomous security robot named “Secret Agent Man”, or SAM for short. The robot is set to redefine safety standards for the multitude of visitors, residents, and employees that grace the park’s grounds.
Autonomous security
Knightscope, the creators of many other security robots, have been dedicated to the craft for many years. In fact, we previously reported them as being amongst the top 50 robotic investments back in 2017. As a testament to the company’s dedication and expertise, SAM is armed with advanced security capabilities. But if you think the robot will be utilized as an informational tool, think again.

SAM’s job is to provide real-time monitoring and proactive response to potential security incidents. The robot’s mobility, equipped with 360-degree vision, enables it to traverse at walking speeds while meticulously carrying out its tasks of deterrence, detection, and reporting. It can also connect with security in case someone wants to report something. This can be done with a simple push of a button.

EVP and Chief Client Officer at Knightscope, Stacy Stephens, added that they’ve been deploying security robots as SAM since 2015. Since William Santana Li founded the company in 2013, its vision has extended beyond simply augmenting security. It envisions transforming public safety and enhancing community experiences. By deploying Autonomous Security Robots like SAM, the company aims to make a tangible impact on crime prevention and response. Li comments that the simple presence of these robots is a deterrent to crimes. These robots drive around and record at all times. Other than detecting irregularities directly, they can hold up to 90 TB of data which no human security guard would be able to process.
People may be a little bit more accustomed to seeing a cleaning or informational robot roaming the grounds, so it might take some time to get used to a robot that’s not any of those things. Able to travel in any weather condition and powered by algorithms that are capable of detecting a vast variety of irregularities, SAM and his kind promise to be something we are gonna see more in the following years. I am personally excited to see how the industry evolves and if a robot can truly replace a human guard.
