Augmented reality (AR) has been here for a while now and has entered different markets, like gaming and beauty. Now, with products like XREAL and ThinkReality available on the market, it’s not a surprise if companies are taking it a step further. One organization called the Industrial Technology Research Institute is trying to do just that by expanding the AR view from glasses to vehicle displays, thus creating AR Vehicles for mass transportation or other purposes. During CES 2024, they recently presented the AR Interactive Vehicle Display which allows passengers to access information via the window of a moving vehicle.

One of the main issues that the AR Interactive Vehicle Display solves is removing the need for an accessory for the user. Normally, a person would need to have AR glasses or an app to experience the technology. The display is a transparent micro LED smart panel that doubles as a window of the vehicle. Since the window is the AR display, one would only need to look out the window and interact with it as information is shown.

Since viewers can see through the display, they can still enjoy the view as the display shows information about the scenery as they drive by. This is made possible as the AR Interactive Vehicle Display utilizes a combination of GPS positioning and eye-tracking technology. Apart from providing information about the area, it also lessens the possibility of motion sickness.

According to the company, the AR Interactive Vehicle Display can be integrated into different modes of transportation, from buses to cruise ships. Imagine how this can be utilized in industries like tourism. While it won’t probably replace actual tour guides, it can definitely help provide basic information about an area and pique the interest of commuters. However, it’s unclear when this will be mass-produced and how durable these screens are, but it is an advancement for AR.
