Google Announces End of Business Profile Chat Feature: What You Should Know

-

Google does it again. Another tool, or feature, in this case, is removed and lands in the Google graveyard. Google has now announced that it will discontinue the Business Profile chat feature, a tool many small businesses have relied on for customer interaction. This move is part of Google’s ongoing effort to “continually improve their tools,” leaving many wondering how to adapt.

Google Maps chat for business is sunsetting

The Business Profile chat feature has been a convenient way for customers to connect with businesses directly through Google Search and Maps. Its removal means small and local businesses will need to pivot to other methods of communication. While this might feel like a setback, it’s crucial to understand the avenues that remain open for customer interaction.

The removal of this feature will undoubtedly affect businesses that have heavily integrated it into their customer service strategies. However, companies can still leverage Google’s ecosystem through other profile features, such as contact information, website links, and business descriptions. It’s essential to update these areas to ensure they provide all necessary information clearly and comprehensively.

When will the business chat be disabled?

Google has provided a clear timeline for phasing out the chat feature, allowing businesses time to prepare for the transition. Starting July 15, 2024, customers can no longer initiate new chat conversations with businesses through Google. Any ongoing conversations will notify users that chat functionality will soon end. This gives firms two weeks to wrap up active communications and guide customers to other platforms.

By July 31, 2024, the chat feature will cease entirely. From this date, businesses will no longer receive new messages through Google’s Business Profile. Companies need to inform their regular customers about these changes and suggest alternative ways to stay in touch.

With the discontinuation of the Business Profile chat feature, also known as the Google My Business chat, businesses need to explore alternative communication channels. Email and phone remain vital for direct communication, so ensure these details are prominently featured on your Business Profile. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X also offer real-time interaction capabilities that can fill the gap left by Google’s chat feature. Promoting your social media handles on your Business Profile can enhance customer engagement.

Consider integrating dedicated customer service tools such as Zendesk or Freshdesk or adding a live chat feature to your website for efficient query management. Before the chat feature is completely phased out, download your chat history via Google Takeout to retain valuable customer interaction records. Additionally, update your website to include detailed service descriptions, FAQs, and a clear contact page to serve as a comprehensive resource for your customers.

Maintaining customer engagement

Despite removing the Business Profile chat feature, maintaining strong customer engagement is possible. Here are some best practices:

  • Regular updates: Keep your Google Business Profile updated with the latest information about your business. This includes new contact details, service changes, and any relevant news.
  • Customer notifications: Send out notifications or newsletters to inform your customers about the change and how they can continue to reach you.
  • Feedback channels: Ensure multiple channels for customers to provide feedback. These can include email surveys, social media polls, or feedback forms on your website.

Conclusion

The upcoming discontinuation of Google’s Business Profile chat feature marks a significant change, but it also presents an opportunity for businesses to refresh their customer communication strategies. By adopting alternative methods and staying proactive, businesses can continue to engage effectively with their customers.
