GMC Announces New HUMMER EV As Their First Fully Electric Vehicle

-

The super-sized dirt-devil from Detroit is back, but with a twist. GMC’s all-electric 2022 HUMMER EV will be hitting streets soon with loads of state-of-the-art features.

On October 20, GMC released the various enhancements coming with the upcoming release of the HUMMER EV Edition 1 that was announced earlier that month. According to General Motors, this vehicle will be the “first fully-electric addition to GMC’s lineup, driven by next-generation EV propulsion technology”.

A groundbreaking addition to the GMC lineup

Obviously, this vehicle’s shiniest component is the fact that it’s emission-free, running on General Motors’ new Ultium batteries. This lets the vehicle run an estimated range of over 350 miles (over 560 kilometers). It has fast-charging capabilities that add “nearly 100 miles of range in 10 minutes of charging” and rapid acceleration with 0-60mph in approximately 3 seconds. Apart from that, the HUMMER EV proudly sports “best-in-class 1,000 horsepower and combined axle torque of GM-estimated 11,500 lb-ft.”

The myriad of the HUMMER EV’s other features is by no means to be overlooked, however. One of which is segment-exclusive 4-wheel steer featuring CrabWalk, which allows for diagonal movement aiding in transportation on rougher terrain. Other additions include the MultiPro tailgate with six functions, large Infotainment screens, and UltraVision that hosts up to 18 camera views for the driver’s safety and comfort.

All these make the HUMMER EV both a car and a formidable piece of tech. Additional features harken back to the HUMMER’s original roots as an off-road vehicle built to withstand some of mother nature’s worst. Such features include a steel underbody armor, standard 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, and the ability to raise suspension height approximately 6 in. (149 mm). These elements help with “scaling 18-inch verticals and driving through water that is more than 2 feet deep.” This new HUMMER is built as a flexible and dependable vehicle for the modern outdoor enthusiast and city-dweller alike.

A future powered by electricity

The leading figures in Detroit are proud of their achievement. “We had one goal for HUMMER EV: Build the most capable factory truck ever,” shared Al Oppenheiser, GMC HUMMER EV chief engineer, adding that “It’s an absolute off-road beast with a unique e4WD drive system that provides maneuverability, unlike anything GM has ever offered before.”

Mark Reuss, president of General Motors, considers this new HUMMER a revolutionary new addition to the auto market. “With our Ultium Drive architecture as the foundation for an exceptionally broad range of performance, HUMMER EV is perfect for the customer who wants capability, efficiency and performance,” Reuss said.

Besides all the fancy gizmos and gadgets, the HUMMER EV marks the start of a shift for General Motors toward a future powered by electricity. According to General Motors, they invested a total of $2.2 billion investment to repurpose the nearly 40-year-old Detroit-Hamtramck assembly center. “This innovative truck comes to market with speed and purpose, bringing GM another step closer to an all-electric future,” said Reuss.

Whether it’s the long-lasting Ultium batteries, technological enhancements such as infotainment screens and the MultiPro Tailgate, or adaptive suspension, GMC’s HUMMER EV Edition 1 will most surely cause countless ripples in the automotive industry. According to GM, initial production for the HUMMER EV will begin in the Fall of 2021.
