Can You Watch ‘Dragon Age: Absolution’ If You Haven’t Played the Games?

-

The game series Dragon Age has appealed to players since its first installment, Dragon Age: Origins. Over the years, it has gathered an active community of fans. As such, it isn’t surprising that it gets its own show. In early December, BioWare released an anime on Netflix called Dragon Age: Absolution.

Dragon Age devotees will be thrilled by the references made to the games and by the appearance of some of the most beloved characters in the franchise, albeit in flashbacks. But can people who haven’t played the games watch Dragon Age: Absolution?

Taking you where you have never been before

Dragon Age: Absolution focuses on a group of misfits trying to recover a dangerous relic from a mysterious fortress. Indeed, some nods are made to the games, especially Dragon Age: Inquisition. In the first episode, two characters are identified as part of the defunct Inquisition.

However, the callback doesn’t impact the core of Dragon Age: Absolution‘s story: that of the elf, Miriam. This former slave reluctantly agrees to go back to the place she escaped from to help her former lover, Hira. Since the story centers on the personal struggles of this new character, the show can be enjoyed by everyone.

Respecting the heart of the Dragon Age series

Not only is Dragon Age: Absolution a good starting point if you don’t know the Dragon Age universe, but it respects the heart of the series. It focuses on a less-than-heroic character suddenly thrown amid something far bigger than her. She has to make choices that will impact the world while facing her worst fears.

The bottom line is it does not matter if you already know the Dragon Age universe. You should watch Dragon Age: Absolution if you haven’t discovered it yet. The show is also a good way to whet the appetite of fans anticipating BioWare’s Dragon Age: Dreadwolf which will be published by EA.
