Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not here to hate on the direction of the music industry today; I’m just wondering how it became like this. I don’t loathe it and I also don’t obsess over it. Majority of our music today is described as “techno” or “artificial”. Hip-hop is in every corner, beat drops are taking over the world, and repeated rhythms without words are such a huge thing right now. I have to be honest they are really catchy.
I mean it kind of seems like we’re going back to the classical period of music where words weren’t very active, except now everything is very lively. It seems like every song is something you can dance to.
DJ-ing is also rampant recently. People even do it at home and buy their own launchpads — an 8×8 grid of large illuminated buttons that could be used to trigger sounds, loops, effects and other parameters. One of the most famous songs right now and still topping the charts is “Closer” by The Chainsmokers.
Sounds cool right? Even my favourite band Fall Out Boy has gone from rock and is now evolving along with the music industry. Listen to “Back to Earth” by Fall Out Boy. My conclusion is… technology.
Mankind is drooling over technology, and with the convenience of pressing buttons, you can make music in an instant! I feel like a lot of people are also patronizing these kinds of music because we are more of an energetic century and love having a good time.
I still prefer rock but I also adore some songs from today like the new version of “Where is the Love” by The Black Eyed Peas and “Gangsta” by Kehlani. How about you? What’s your taste in music? How do you feel about our music today?
