Prosocial Media: Cultivating Positive Online Interactions

-

We know that social media can be a powerful tool, and we have enjoyed its positive side. Of course, it also has its negative side as well; the spread of fake news and mental health deterioration are just some of the problems that it has. However, a new movement toward prosocial media is emerging. It aims to counter the negative side of social media and focus on using these platforms for positive social impact instead.

Call for positive impact

Research has suggested that social media usage can affect a person’s social identity and mental health. While social media can be useful, excessive or inappropriate use may pose risks to mental health, resulting in depression, anxiety, and addiction. Oftentimes, the illusion of anonymity on the internet leads to users hurling harmful comments and never facing any consequences. At times, being connected 24/7 also poses security risks such as privacy issues and other cybercrimes like phishing to its users.

However, since social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, it is only natural that we learn to curb its negatives to keep benefiting from its positives. Prosocial media content is generally seen as socially beneficial, like promoting kindness, cooperation, acceptance of diversity, or altruism. Some also consider personally helpful content to be prosocial.

There are social media platforms with apps and websites that promote prosocial media. One example of a prosocial media platform is BeReal, which encourages users to post more authentic and unedited snapshots of their daily lives. The random, two-minute window for posting leaves no time to edit or curate content. Another is Nextdoor, which helps neighbors stay connected to the people, places, and info in their community to build trust and relationships with people around them.

A safer cyberspace

Cyberbullying, cancel culture, and fake news peddling have been rampant in the past few years. With users shining light on these issues and encouraging the spread of information about prosocial media, we may build a safer and happier cyberspace. Since we spend most of our time consuming different forms of media, it’s only right that we foster a healthier and more educational platform and space for its users.
