GitLab, a DevSecOps platform, has announced an expansion of its integrations with Google Cloud. This expansion supports developers towards working more efficiently and productively. Although they initially announced their partnership in 2023, this is their first wave of integration. With a user base exceeding 30 million globally, the company stands as an increasingly known DevSecOps platform that aims to accelerate software innovation, enhance operational efficiency, and reduce security risks through its suite of development tools.
Aiming to improve development productivity
The collaboration plans to streamline the authentication process and automate Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) workflows. Essentially, GitLab and Google Cloud aim to simplify developers’ software access management and automate the testing and delivery of updates. By integrating GitLab’s DevSecOps capabilities with Google Cloud’s Identity Access Management, Workload Identity Federation, Artifact Registry, and Compute Engine, joint customers, in theory, can expect a more cohesive development experience.

Gabe Monroy, Vice President of Developer Experience at Google Cloud, says providing developers with complete visibility into the software delivery process will increase productivity. He explains that the company “offers developers the choice, capability, and security to work effectively and productively at every step of the software development lifecycle.” Furthermore, he believes that “the expanded availability of these integrations between Google Cloud and GitLab brings more capabilities for developers in each of these critical areas.”

Future potential?
Google Cloud has forged partnerships with industry players such as Salesforce, SAP, Cisco, VMware, and Informatica, which continue to thrive and are generally recognized as successful collaborations. Moving forward, the integration could enhance DevSecOps practices, offering organizations improved agility, security, and innovation capabilities.
