Brelyon Introduces Ultra Reality, the Headset-Free Virtual Monitor

-

Brelyon from MIT introduced the world’s first headset-free virtual monitor with the Ultra Reality product line during CES 2022. The monitor aims to harness new optical technology for monocular depth.

If you’ve ever wanted to experience a truly immersive virtual world without a VR headset, the Ultra Reality line might be your best bet. The 120-inch curved display features the company’s unique supersonic light-field expansion technology and the latest in new physics and computational optics, all in a small desktop footprint.

Plans towards headset-less VR

By building on the work done by the MIT Media Lab, the Brelyon team pioneered technological improvements in computational wavefront engineering for the creation of the Ultra Reality monitor. Along with patented supersonic light-field expansion technologies, they were able to simulate a large panoramic screen with single or many depth levels without the use of headsets.

Founder and CEO of Brelyon, Dr. Barmak Heshmat, shares that “Ultra Reality displays are pioneering a new category of immersive displays that will bring gaming, virtual reality, e-sports, and more to the desktop.” Seeing the need to reduce the need for a bulky headset, the company opted to change the optical technology for monitors instead through their product.

With Brelyon’s Ultra Reality display, they aim to provide an immersive experience for the viewer without any additional gadgets on their head. Immersion without isolation, support for legacy content, and enormous virtual screen real estate without taking up desk space are some of the advantages as well.

Brelyon will be integrating LG Display’s P-OLED technology into the Ultra Reality monitor to service the growing large-format gaming and productivity industries. The use of LG Display will allow new markets and types of immersive experiences to be opened up.

Currently, Brelyon has pilot partnerships with companies that work in gaming, financial, productivity, and industrial industries. There’s no word yet on when this will be mass-produced, but it is interesting to see how feasible the Ultra Reality monitor will be in the future.
