Advantages and Disadvantages of Asynchronous Work

-

Waiting for other people to finish your task can be unnerving sometimes. Workflow processes, however, sometimes require people to work in sequential steps, if not in a synchronized one. With the workplace landscape evolving, other practices and work processes are also being adapted, one of which is working asynchronously.

People working in different time zones

Asynchronous work can be applied in both remote and on-site jobs. However, it is commonly observed in remote and hybrid workers as it comes with more time flexibility. Companies with employees from all over the world sometimes adapt asynchronous work arrangements since they work in different time zones. Some tasks can be done without the need for constant communication with the team. There are also available online tools that let teams work on the same project at a different pace, such as Trello and Miro.

Since asynchronous work arrangement is a practice that lets employees work at different times independently, there is no time wasted waiting to move to the next step. Without the time constraint, this could result in better productivity for each team member and the team as a whole. Adapting this kind of arrangement may increase productivity since reports are submitted, and the workload is done on time without relying on others to finish their tasks.

Interpersonal relationship and collaborative projects

One concern about having an asynchronous working environment is the lack of real-time communication and collaboration between teams. This may result in misunderstandings among members. Instant feedback and discussion between the team leaders and their members may also be delayed. Another case is if there’s an urgent matter, it may not be addressed promptly. This, however, can be combatted if all the team members can easily be reached. Organized scheduling and a concise but clear stipulation are some ways to make the best of working asynchronously.

Deciding on an effective working arrangement will ultimately depend on the type of job assigned. Most freelancers and part-timers have no problems working asynchronously with any company. With the nature of these types of works, it’s a norm. As long as the assigned task is done or the hours required are met, there will be no problem arising from this workplace arrangement. It is management’s discretion and evaluation that will decide the type of tasks and working practice that will prove if asynchronous work is effective for them.
