5 Interesting Google Apps You Might Have Never Heard of

-

Usually it’s a big thing when major companies like Google release new apps. However, some of them get silently released if they are not part of the strategy roadmap.
The real purpose might be merely of experimental nature. Or perhaps it was just a small project and did not get any marketing budget. Who knows why.
Here are five such apps by Google that are interesting but were never really called out to anyone. We got this list for Android devices, but the apps might be also available on other platforms.

Expeditions

Google Expeditions is a virtual reality teaching tool that lets you lead or join immersive virtual trips all over the world — get up close with historical landmarks, dive underwater with sharks, even visit outer space! Built for the classroom and small group use, Google Expeditions allows a teacher acting as a “guide” to lead classroom-sized groups of “explorers” through collections of 360° and 3D images while pointing out interesting sights along the way. Features: • Guide classroom-sized groups of locally connected users from your phone or tablet. • Explore along with a guide in immersive VR by putting your Android phone into a Google Cardboard viewer (http://g.co/cardboard) or use an Android tablet or phone in 2D “magic window” mode. • Connect devices over the same WiFi network - if the Guide has downloaded some Expeditions, there is no internet connectivity required to run the Expedition! • Choose from a growing list of over 200 Expeditions - each one is a curated set of VR imagery along with integrated descriptions, talking points and questions. With this app Google sends you on a virtually immersive field trip. Could Expeditions be the future of education? Probably not, but it definitely has the potential to make things a lot more interesting by combining VR and learning.

Crowdsource

Do quick, simple tasks that have a huge impact - like improve the quality of Google Translate in your language, or of Google Maps in your country, etc. Each microtask takes no more than 5-10 seconds, so knock away a few the next time you find yourself with a few moments to kill - be it while waiting in line at the grocery store or on the train ride home. Everytime you use it, you know that you've made the internet a better place for your community. If you enjoy contributing to the Internet by completing small tasks, Crowdsource might be for you. Personally, I like contributing with little things, like a Wikipedia edit or uploading a photo to a location on Google Maps, that didn’t have one. Have a look if the Crowdsource tasks are of interest to you. Possibly a more productive time killer than a casual mobile game.

Measure

Grab a quick measurement using your Tango-enabled phone with the Measure app. Simply point your phone at what you’d like to measure, use the cursor to place the points, and then you will see your measurements displayed in augmented reality. With Measure you can: - Measure length, width, height, and even the volume of objects — from your door frame to your desk chair - Create blueprints of your measurement that include the length, area, and extrusion in either imperial or metric units to easily share - Take a picture of your AR measurement This app is only for Tango-enabled devices, like the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro or the Asus ZenFone AR, but it looks very useful. With Measure you can leverage the camera of your device to have it take measure of objects in real life. Augmented reality brings you the ultimate measuring tool.
